Looking ahead – Vegan Camp 2017

The first vegan camp, held in June 2012. Snow is not in the forecast this time.

Every two years, the Christchurch Vegetarian Centre runs an all-ages “Vegan Camp” in Hanmer Springs over Easter. Registrations are now open for the 2017 Camp, which will be from the 14th to the 17th of April.

As taken from the vegan camp website
The aim of Vegan Camp is to build vegan community and to provide an opportunity for vegans to come together to relax, indulge, grow and play. Delicious vegan meals will be provided and both group and independent activities will be scheduled so that you can get to meet or be reacquainted with other vegans, whilst also having your own space and chill out time. Accommodation options include motels, cabins and camping – something for every preference and budget.”

It is a great opportunity to join some like-minded company for food and activities, and gives us the chance to feel like we’re the “norm”, in the non-vegan world we live in.
Registrations are open to all vegans, as well as those who have been vegan for at least two weeks prior to the start of the camp, or those who are attending with a vegan friend.

Our new vegan cafe

Last week Palmerston North’s new (and only) vegan cafe opened its doors to the public.
The team at Wholegrain Organics, originally based in Kimbolton, have opened a cafe and food store on The Square, in Palmerston North, next to Number 1 shoes. Stocking a range of delicious vegan food, organic produce and other pantry staples, you may have encountered the team at their trailer in the Square on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also at the Feilding Farmer’s Market on Fridays.
Their specialities include vegan pizzas (highly recommended), vegan cheesecakes (also highly recommended), and their freshly baked wholegrain bread, as well as other fresh and healthy meal options (including breakfast!!!)

They also run cooking classes for youth, with a focus on food that is plant-based and healthy.

Check out their Facebook page for regular menu updates
Their opening hours are 7.30am – 6pm ish, Monday-Thursday. They will be opening on Sundays in the near future too.
We hope to see you there!
Note: Some of their products do contain honey, so be sure to ask first.

Vegan Chickun Wonton Recipe

Makes roughly 24 wontons

1/2 a packet of Vegetarian Crispy Chicken (available at Davis Trading)
1 medium sized onion, diced
1 t garlic, crushed
1 t ginger, crushed
2 T soy sauce
Flavour sachets, seasonings, and oil from one packet of Indomie Mi Goreng Noodles
2 T cornflour or flour of choice
Approximately 24 sheets of Vegan wonton pastry (Available at Davis Trading)

Shred the chickun and saute with the garlic, ginger, onion, and soy sauce til the onion is soft (add a bit of water if it begins to stick)
Add the flavourings and mix, and then mix in the cornflour
Next, scoop roughly a tablespoon of the mixture into a sheet of wonton paper and shape accordingly (or, if you’re like me, just dollop a spoonful in and press the edges in so nothing spills out)
Repeat til you’ve used up all the mixture, and for best results, deep fry, although pan frying or baking would probably work too
Drain off any excess oil and serve with sweet and sour sauce

Meal cost: Approximately $7 for 24 wontons
